La Liga: FC Barcelona 0-1 Malaga CF: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's disappointing La Liga loss against Malaga.

Saves Made: 2

Bostjan says: 7.5

Giving up one goal while playing in goal for a team with as much talent as Barcelona has should not result in a loss. It’s especially annoying for a goalkeeper when the goal he gives up comes as a result of a terrible back-pass from one of his teammates - which left Bravo in a terrible spot. He was left with a choice to wait in the box and hope Juamni misses or take a chance and hope you don’t bring down the attacker and clear the ball away without using your hands. It didn’t work out. Overall, though, Bravo was solid in goal, making a couple good saves.

Similarly to the Real Sociedad game it was again one poor defensive play by Barcelona that decided the entire game. That time the culprit was Alba, this time it was Alves, who made the boneheaded back-pass that turned out to be the perfect assist for Juanmi. If that play doesn’t happen maybe Barcelona can break down what surely would’ve been a smaller bus than what they were up against now. And it’s not like Alves made up for his mistake in any way in this one, making many more poor plays both on offense and on defense.

Gerard Pique
5.4

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 66

Passes: 55

Pass Accuracy: 96 %

Tackles: 3

Interceptions: 3

Aerial Duels Won : 1

Bostjan says: 6.0

Like most of his teammates Pique, too, struggled. He looked shaky throughout the match. Even though he did make a couple important tackles, he rarely instilled any confidence. Just before halftime he was twice exposed in a matter of a minute. Oh, and his communication with Alves was terrible on many occasions with the two often failing to cover for each other and switch back up later. His uninspiring performance was capped off with a missed chance in the dying moments of the game.

Jeremy Mathieu
5.1

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 73

Passes: 60

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Tackles: 3

Interceptions: 6

Clearances: 1

Aerial Duels Won: 6

Fouls: 0

Bostjan says: 6.5

Only two players have started in all five Barcelona losses this season, Busquets is one, while the other is Mathieu. Coincidence? Maybe, but none of the two can be blamed for this loss. Mathieu had a relatively decent game in the heart of the Barcelona defense, but it was far from a "the ball stops here" performance. For example, he completely forgot about Horta behind him in the 35th minute and the Malaga player had a good look on goal.

Jordi Alba
5.0

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 92

Passes: 72

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Tackles: 1

Interceptions: 3

Clearances: 1

Key Passes : 0

Aerial Duels Won : 1

Bostjan says: 8.0

I cannot remember the last time Alba lost possession so many times in attack. Cross after cross he hit the man five feet in front of him, and when he didn’t opt for the cross his short passing was also often off the mark. He was always open for the pass from Neymar, but very rarely he managed to actually create something positive with the ball at his feet. Defensively he was quite solid, and he and Mathieu often combined well to get the ball out of danger, but Alba has to bring more to the table.

Sergio Busquets
5.1

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 92

Passes: 79

Tackles: 3

Interceptions: 4

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Clearances: 1

Aerial Duels Won: 3

Turnovers: 1

Key passes: 1

Sam says: 7.0

With Busquets pushed high for the corner, the Málaga goal came from an area in which he usually patrols. The keeper’s long ball landed in centre of the pitch and left Dani Alves with a job to do, he made a mess of it. Although Busquets can't entirely be blamed considering he is one of few Barça players with height it made sense for him to go up for the corner. Busquets had a real job to do from here on out, as Barça pushed more players forward looking for the equaliser, more chances fell for Málaga to counterattack. He performed well making 3 tackles and 4 interceptions but even still Málaga did manage to break away and trouble the Barça defence.

Rafinha
5.0

Minutes played: 62

Touches: 43

Passes: 33

Pass Accuracy: 91 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/1

Turnovers: 3

Key Passes: 0

Fouls Won : 1

Tackles: 2

Sam says: 6.0

Rafinha had one of Barça best chances of the game. A corner ball fell to his feet and he strikes it sweetly enough. The ball was heading for the back of the net but was denied by a goal line clearance. Similar to Iniesta, he found his attacking options limited due to the well organised defence in front of him. Registering just one shot on target and no key passes, he was substituted just after the hour mark.

Andres Iniesta
4.6

Minutes played: 66

Touches: 52

Passes: 44

Pass Accuracy: 89 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 1 /1

Fouls Won: 1

Interceptions: 3

Turnovers: 2

Key Passes: 0

Fouls : 1

Sam says: 6.0

Throughout the whole game, Iniesta struggled to really create anything. Málaga were well organised and restricted Iniesta and his teammates as much as possible. His passing also suffered, making just 44 passes in the game. Not known for his aerial ability, Iniesta found himself with a golden chance to draw Barça level. A cross from Messi was wall matched by Iniesta’s run but his header lacked any real power to trouble the keeper. A bad day for Barça, and Iniesta was hooked after 66 minutes.

Luis Suarez
4.8

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 46

Passes: 23

Pass Accuracy: 74 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 2/2

Turnovers: 4

Successful Dribbles: 2

Key Passes: 1

Fouls Won: 2

Clearances : 1

Ahmed says: 6.5

Put in a shift on both sides of the pitch and was the only one of MSN to have a shot on target, but Suarez ultimately wasn’t incisive enough. The two shots he had resulted in pretty straight forward saves for Carlos Kameni. 4 turnovers, 2 dribbles and 1 key pass is more than respectable.

Lionel Messi
5.3

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 86

Passes: 57

Pass Accuracy: 75 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 1 /0

Fouls Won: 1

Successful Dribbles: 6

Key Passes: 2

Turnovers: 2

Tackles: 1

Ahmed says: 6.5

Even though he wasn’t anywhere near his best, he (along with Suarez and Neymar) still comfortably carried Barcelona’s biggest threat in this match, as expected. Messi completed 6 dribbles yet found himself playing deeper and deeper as the match went on. Indeed, he only had one shot all match (and it wasn’t on target). He also over hit many more crosses than he usually does. Messi managed to be make 2 key passes according to the official statistics, but it would have been a lot more if it wasn’t for the (incorrect) offside calls. Nonetheless, creativity must be better against Manchester City. Perhaps MSN had their eyes on the Champions League game. Credit must be given to Malaga for their heroic performance and more specifically, for restricting space.

Neymar
5.1

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 109

Passes: 69

Pass Accuracy: 87 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0

Fouls Won: 3

Key Passes: 3

Successful Dribbles: 7

Turnovers: 6

Ahmed says: 6.5

Showed flashes of brilliance but his end product was lacking on the whole. Neymar was constantly trying to make things happen. Indeed, he had 109 touches of the ball, more than any other player on the pitch. Neymar completed 7 dribbles, 3 key passes and 6 turnovers, thus, good numbers in most games. It was his excellent pass which provided Pedro with a good chance towards the end. Having said that, I thought his corner-kicks were mixed to say the least. He was also deservedly cautioned towards the end of the game for a very late tackle.

Ivan Rakitić
4.8

Minutes played: 28

Touches: 23

Passes: 20

Pass Accuracy: 95 %

Interceptions : 1

Arron says: 6.0

The Croatian midfielder was Lucho's first option off the bench as Enrique tried to turn our fortunes around with a few subs, but our problems required more than just a couple of changes -- meaning Rakitic's introduction was all but futile.

Pedro
4.4

Minutes played: 24

Touches: 15

Passes: 10

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Shots/Shots on Target : 2/0

Arron says: 6.0

Ah, what might have been. Surprisingly, it was Pedro in a short cameo who came closest to breaking Barcelona's deadlock, as the Spaniard rippled the side-netting with a fierce shot after an impressive run. Maybe he should have done better with the finish, although can we really criticise Pedro given the complete lack of production from Suarez et al?

Javier Mascherano
4.9

Minutes played: 28

Touches: 15

Passes: 13

Pass Accuracy: 92 %

Tackles : 1

Arron says: 6.0

Mascherano's introduction enabled us to switch to a three-man backline, not that it made much difference. Defensively, Mascherano didn't put a foot wrong, but would we have been better served by making a more offensive substitution?

The Team3.7

Passes: 679

Pass Accuracy: 88 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 11 /5

Tackles: 23

Aerial Battles Won: 56 %

Fouls Won/Committed: 11/9

Arron says: 4.5

Lacklustre. Uninspiring. Pick your negative adjective and apply it here -- it'll probably fit. This was arguably worse than the loss against Celta Vigo or Real Sociedad; rarely do we see the Blaugrana put in such an entirely uncreative shift, especially at the Camp Nou. What's done is done; how we react is important now.

Luis Enrique
4.4

Arron says: 6.0

We all wanted to see some rotation, although that was based on the assumption that the three points were a given. I think with the players on the field, this one can't be blamed solely on the coach -- because there's not an awful lot we can suggest that Enrique should have done differently.

MOTM - Gerard Pique
23%

Arron says: Rafinha

Pick your poison I suppose; Rafinha got my vote for an industrious shift in midfield, but Gerard Pique claimed the community award ahead of Lionel Messi (20%) with just under a quarter of the vote.
