The club addresses “Barçagate”
FC Barcelona has released an official statement as a response to reports that the club’s offices were raided by local police and that ex-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, alongside several higher-ups, were arrested.
Regarding the entry and search by the Catalan Police force this morning at the Camp Nou offices by order of the Instructing Court number 13 in Barcelona, which is in charge of the case relating to the contacting of monitoring services on social networks, FC Barcelona have offered up their full collaboration to the legal and police authorities to help make clear facts which are subject to investigation.
The information and documentation requested by the judicial police force relate strictly to the facts relative to this case.
FC Barcelona express its utmost respect for the judicial process in place and for the principle of presumed innocence for the people affected within the remit of this investigation.
Bartomeu himself is not expected to speak on the matter until tomorrow, in front of a judge.
Reactions from important people in the club’s political arena are coming through.
A candidate to win the presidency, Victor Font, weighed in saying “logically, it’s a sad day for Barcelona because it affects the club’s reputation as an institution.”
One of his opponents, Joan Laporta, said, “Although he did not have a good administration, he still has been president of FC Barcelona and it is news that is not pleasant for anyone. The truth is that it is shocking news, certainly.”
Another former club president, Joan Gaspart said: “I’m sure that Bartomeu is not worried because he has done nothing wrong.”
Enric Masip, a key man in Laporta’s campaign, went on to say, “we have now four years that we leave one problem and enter another. The mismanagement is such that the police comes in and there is no one even to go and give a press conference.”
