Can the president convince the captain to stay?
Joan Laporta was only officially unveiled as Barcelona’s new president on Wednesday but has reportedly already been hard at work thinking about Lionel Messi’s future.
The new president has plans to offer a new deal that is a “life contract” but will see the captain take a pay cut, which will also serve as an example to the rest of the team, according to El Confidencial.
The report reckons Barca are hopeful Messi will understand the need to take a pay cut and that he could see his salary reduced by up to 30 per cent. In exchange Barca will offer a role with the club that will see him involved after his playing days are over.
The club are pondering options such as an ambassadorial role or even some kind of coaching position at the Camp Nou but are in agreement that they must “sell him a legacy that goes beyond his successful sports career.”
Laporta has already made it clear he will do all he can to keep Messi. The new president addressed the captain directly at his unveiling on Wednesday.
He said: “We will try everything because he is the best player in history and forgive me for saying this to you in front of everyone here, but you know how much I love you and how much we want you to stay.”
