The captain hit the landmark on Monday
Xavi has congratulated Lionel Messi on matching his appearance record for Barcelona in Monday’s 4-1 win over Huesca in La Liga.
The two players are now joint top of the charts when it comes to all-time appearances for the club on 767 outings, although Messi can claim the record as his own next time out.
Xavi took time out to send a message to Messi after the game with a post on Instagram.
He wrote: “Huge congratulations, Leo!!. It’s an honour that you have matched this record, congratulations friend.”
The former Barcelona midfielder is not the only player to congratulate Messi. The club published a video featuring players past and present such as Neymar, Ronaldinho, Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto and Sergio Busquets paying tribute to the captain.

Messi offered his own thoughts after the game. He wrote on social media: “It is a great honor to reach this number of matches played with FC Barcelona. Thanks to all the colleagues who accompanied me over the years, and to my family and friends for always being by my side.”
