Eric García has spoken publicly on his decision not to renew his contract with Manchester City, amid rumors that he is keen on signing back with his boyhood club, FC Barcelona.

“I made the decision [not to renew] at that time, what I will do later I do not know. Now, I am focused on City and the national team,” he said.

García is with the Spanish national team as they face Greece, Georgia, and Kosovo in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

He insisted that any negotiation with Barcelona, or any other team, “is carried out by my representative, I am focused on this season, there is a last third where there is everything to play for, and now the three games with the national team. We also have the European Championship in the summer, and I must be prepared in case the coach counts on me.“

García, who has previously represented Spain at U19 and U21 levels, already has four caps for the Spanish national team. A Barcelona native, he came up through La Masia. He joined Barcelona’s academy at age 7 and remained there until he was 16 before moving to Manchester.

García captained City’s U18 team and played in the UEFA Youth League with the U19 team. He made his debut for City’s full team in December 2018.

He has since become integrated into City’s squad, although it seems not for much longer. Last August, García announced he would not renew his contract, which ends this year. At the beginning of this month, City boss and former Barcelona player and coach Pep Guardiola announced García would join the Catalans on a free transfer in the summer.
