It’s escapism at this point.
Even with football on pause around the world, silly transfer rumor stories are still piling up. They seem even more incredible than before. Clubs are bleeding revenue, and we don’t even know when it’ll be safe to go back to playing exactly. When you hear “a source close to Antoine Griezmann says,” you hope the source is only metaphorically, not physically, close to the player.
During normal times, these transfer stories are a fun distraction at best, an annoyance at worst. We’ve all rolled our eyes at rumors of “shock moves” and “last minute swoops.”
But these days, there is a comfort in them. They’re a reminder that this is not the end of the world, and not permanent. There is anxiety and uncertainty to be sure. There will be a horrific toll. But we will persevere. And we will play another season. And players will move around.
A little escapism these days isn’t too bad. I know for some people, it might seem even more annoying than usual to read a transfer rumor dreamed up by someone on the frontpage of a tabloid. Something so silly seems wrong when so many important things are happening. But for me, it’s worth a chuckle at least.
Over here, we are being forced to be very creative with our posts to still give you good content. I’m hoping the weirder, sillier posts that we make at least bring a little calm to you guys. Maybe just a moment of fun or perhaps a good memory to take your mind off things, or to help pass the time while in quarantine. If we can do that, we will have done our job well.
