Football’s governing will recommend changes to deal with the coronavirus situation

FIFA’s Coronavirus Working Group will recommend several changes to deal with the sport’s looming financial crisis, according to a document seen by Reuters. First, players’ and coaches’ contracts should be extended until the end of the domestic season. In practice, a lot of contracts are not signed on a per-season basis, but rather based on the calendar year. This may throw off all kinds of planning that assumed, for example, that this eason would end by June 30th.

Second, transfer windows will be moved to correspond with new dates for seasons. And lastly, the document reportedly recommends clubs and players negotiate ways to find solutions for salaries during the stoppage. FC Barcelona has reportedly been working on a reduction of all players’ salaries during the stoppage, as one example.

Most football competitions around the world have been put on hold, with re-start dates set tentatively at best.

Expiring contracts while the season is not over could be just one potential headache for football to deal with if changes are not made.
