Does this change things?
Barcelona’s reported interest in Spanish U21 star Dani Ceballos, who plays for Real Betis, comes with a bit of controversy. The young player launched offensive anti-Catalan tweets and insults at Gerard Pique when Ceballos was in his teens.
Now, more tweets are being uncovered that paint a different picture of Ceballos: that of a Barcelona fan. Ceballos, believe it or not, comes across as a fan of the Blaugrana despite his anti-Catalan sentiments.
“Good cule morning,” one tweet reads. "Football is too small for Lionel Messi," another reads, "what a star, he supersedes the sport!"
And it goes on:
"I'm biting my nails, let's go FCB!"
"The best team in the world today is FCB"
"Nothing better than this when watching football, let's go Barcelona"
"Watching FCB"
“It's too bad we have to go 2 months without seeing the god of football, what a shame for those of us who watch football."
“Mamma mia, Neymar!”
“Simply Ronaldinho”
And it goes on. Meanwhile, he tweets negatively about Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid’s coach at the time. It would all read like a typical Barcelona fan tweeting were it not for his other comments. It seems Ceballos’s beef is or at least was political: he dislikes people who are pro Catalan independence or perceived to believe in it, such as Gerard Pique.
And at first the interest was just being reported by MARCA, so whatever, but Diario SPORT and Mundo Deportivo both joined the chorus saying Barcelona’s interest in Ceballos was real.
We did a poll here asking whether Barcelona should forgive the young midfielders’ past mistakes.
The results as of the time of writing:
- 43% Yes, his mistakes should be forgiven. (317 votes)
- 46% No, anyone who says that has no place at Barça (338 votes)
- 11% No, for other reasons (79 votes)
That means that 57% were against signing him. True, this was not a scientific poll but I think that sums up the fanbase’s feelings accurately: pretty divided, although notably a majority were against it.
I wonder if these latest revelations will change anyone’s mind...
