The Transfer That Will Not Die: Paulinho to Barcelona

Despite the Chinese transfer window closing, Barcelona could still make the purchase happen

Barcelona made an offer for Paulinho. Guangzhou Evergrande said no. Barcelona made another offer. Still no. Barcelona made a “final offer.” Guangzhou said no again. The Chinese transfer window closed.

That should be the end of the saga, right?

Well, no, says Diario SPORT. True, Chinese clubs may not purchase players anymore, but they can still sell them. And here comes Barcelona with another “final offer” (for real this time, we promise).

The report says Barcelona are confident about signing the Brazilian midfielder, and consider “no alternatives” to his signing. And because of that, the final offer is 30 million plus bonuses. Those bonuses could make the cost reach, or even exceed, Paulinho’s 40 million euro release clause.

Guangzhou also signed Muriqui recently, and now they have five foreign players when only three are allowed in the Chinese league. That might improve Paulinho’s odds of leaving. But then again, they could be trying to offload Jackson Martinez, who has not performed to expectations after being transferred from Atletico Madrid.

Both Muriqui and Jackson are forwards, while Paulinho occupies another position. With the Chinese transfer window closed, Guangzhou cannot purchase a replacement if Paulinho leaves.
