The full-back is a timely and essential signing
After weeks of no solid transfer news, Barcelona have finally set things in motion by confirming an agreement with Nelson Semedo in what is the best decision of the summer so far (Messi’s renewal aside), by the club.
While the timing of the transfer is rather surprising considering that the board had reportedly been chasing Hector Bellerin for quite some time, it is important to understand the gravity of this transfer and its impact on the upcoming season.

FC Barcelona played without a true right-back for an entire season, and it cost them dearly as the club missed out on both the Liga and the Champions League.
While some of the blame goes on Luis Enrique for employing rather bizarre tactics for a big chunk of the season, most of the responsibility falls on the club and their poor sporting plan--the club let Dani Alves leave for free to Juventus, while not finding an adequate replacement for the legendary Brazilian.
Instead they opted to rely on the expertise of a winger and midfielder, neither of whom had any significant experience in the role.
The fact that the difference between Barcelona and La Liga was one victory, is painful to say the least.
Nelsinho comes to Barca at a time when the club is in need of desperate reinforcement and while this signing doesn't paper over the cracks, it sure means that this board is perfectly capable of calling the right shots, when push comes to shove.

The next few days will be very important for the club as they begin their pre-season tour. The pressure of the "no-confidence vote" is still simmering in there somewhere, which means the board will go all out to save face and make some more big-name additions to the club.
No matter how the socios vote on Bartomeu's future as the club president, it sure seems like the time has finally come for the fans to stop flipping tables.
