La Liga News: 21 February 2016: Espanyol and Celta Pick Up Wins, Simeone Focused On Villarreal

Celta Vigo held off an Eibar fightback to win 3-2 and move above their opponents into sixth place in La Liga. A goal in each half from John Guidetti, either side of a Jonny effort, had the hosts in total control. But Saul Berjon pulled one back from the spot in the 84th minute and Takashi Inui reduced the deficit further three minutes later, but Eibar could not find a dramatic leveller.
Marco Asensio's second-half strike gave Espanyol a vital 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna as they tasted victory for the first time in 2016. The Real Madrid loanee buried the ball into the net from close range after 52 minutes for his first Espanyol goal. They held on to claim just a second success under coach Constantin Galca, temporarily at least easing the pressure on the Romanian coach.
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has insisted that "there’s nothing more important" than Saturday’s visit of Villarreal in La Liga. Atleti’s match against Villarreal is followed by the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against PSV just three days later, but Simeone made it clear his entire focus lay with the task at hand.
He told reporters: "They are a very good side, fighting for fourth place, with a good lead over fifth. Their numbers are very good. The team as a whole are very strong with a clear idea of how they want to play. I have an idea of what I want to do [in terms of team selection] but we play every game thinking about how important it is. And there is nothing more important than the match against Villarreal."
Fifth-placed Sevilla missed the opportunity to close the gap on the Champions League places to five points thanks to their 2-2 draw away at Rayo Vallecano this afternoon. The visitors opened up a two-goal lead within the first 20 minutes at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas, but they were pegged back by strikes either side of the break from Manucho and Miku.
German Pezzella grabbed a quick-fire equaliser as Real Betis claimed a 1-1 draw against fellow Primera Division strugglers Sporting Gijon. The Argentinian turned home a Juan Vargas free-kick after 67 minutes at the Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, cancelling out Carlos Castro's opener of just two minutes earlier. Castro had broken the deadlock, against the run of play, after being played in by Alen Halilovic in a quick break.
