FC Barcelona News: 17 February 2016; Barça Ready to Take on Sporting as 18 Arrive in Gijon

FC Barcelona travel to Gijón to play the game originally postponed due to their participation at the Club World Cup in Japan. Three points against Sporting would move the Catalans six points clear at the top of the Liga table. Other than long-term absentee Rafinha, there are no injury concerns in the Barça camp, but Masip, Douglas, Jordi Alba, Sandro and Sergi Roberto have all been left out of the squad of eighteen.

FC Barcelona have made it to Gijón in Asturias. The team's flight took off at 9:45am from Barcelona-El Prat Airport and landed in Gijón at 11.00am. The plane took off with head coach Luis Enrique, his coaching staff and his 18-man squad on board, and they were accompanied by Club Vice President Susana Monje and Board members Silvio Elias, Pau Vilanova and Oriol Tomàs.

Although Lionel Messi's jaw-dropping penalty against Celta on Sunday continues to be the main talking point in the streets of the Catalan capital, Barcelona players have already turned the page and shifted their attention to their next match. The Blaugranas' relentless schedule will see Luis Enrique's side travelling to Gijon on Wednesday to face Sporting in a game originally postponed due to their participation in the Club World Cup in late December.

Wednesday’s La Liga match between FC Barcelona and Sporting de Gijón will be one of mixed emotions. To start off, Barça manager Luis Enrique is from Gijón, the biggest city in Asturias, Spain, and came up through Sporting’s youth system, eventually debuting for them in the Spanish First Division before eventually going on to a nine-year career at the Catalan Club he now coaches.

Abelardo Fernandez has said his friendship with Barcelona counterpart Luis Enrique will not affect things when his Sporting Gijon side face a team he called "maybe the best of all time." The two were in the same Gijon team as eight-years-olds, later breaking through into the first team at the same time before becoming Barcelona and Spain colleagues.

Luis Enrique will be facing an old friend on Wednesday night at El Molinón. He and Sporting boss ‘Pitu’ Abelardo grew up through the ranks at the Asturian club and both moved on to Barça later in their careers. Luis Enrique spent one season (1990-91) in the Sporting first team, scoring fourteen goals that helped qualify the red-and-whites for the UEFA Cup, including one goal at the Camp Nou.

Alen Halilović came to Futbol Club Barcelona from Dinamo Zagreb in the 2014/15 season. After playing 30 games with Barça B and scoring four goals, the Club sent him to Sporting Gijón on loan last August so he could continue growing as a player. Now, six months after his arrival in Asturias, Halilović will be facing Barça for the first time. It will be a special match for him on Wednesday night.
