The transfer market is over, and only now we start to know everything Barcelona tried to do to strengthen their squad.
Perhaps the most boring soap opera of this summer was Barça's interest in Paris Saint-Germain center-back Marquinhos. The Blaugrana were certain that he was the answer at his position, and they were willing to do everything to sing him. They reportedly agreed a deal with the player, and now it was up to PSG to accept the offer. They never did. Barça tried everything, but in light of the permanent refusal from the French, the Catalan side decided to move on and signed Jérémy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen.
Regarding Marquinhos and Barcelona, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaif confirmed that he indeed received a big offer from Barça to sell the 20-year-old, but he said again that he didn't want to negotiate. Here's what he said to French newspaper 'Le Parisién':
"We indeed received an offer from Barcelona, and it was higher than the €40 million everyone says. It was tempting, but I had to say no. This is not a company, it's not a business. We don't buy players to sell them for more money one year later. If that was the model, we would have sold three or four players this summer. But this is not my philosophy. We want to form the best squad in the world, with the best players in the world. Marquinhos is one of those and he would not leave under any circumstance. He's a part of our plan, and will remain so."
