The defender’s mentality has impressed
Joao Cancelo caught the eye with a superb performance against Porto in the Champions League for Barcelona and has also reportedly stunned his team-mates.
Diario AS report the dressing room think he’s a “competitive animal” who is simply immune to criticism and pressure.
Barcelona’s coaches have also been impressed. “He never gets tired, he is a true athlete,” the technicians are reported to have said.
The stats certainly back that up right now. Cancelo has started the last 18 games in a row for club and country.

Fans will be hoping those stats aren’t a cause for concern, particularly after losing Gavi. Cancelo did pick up a knock against Porto but was quick to play it down afterwards.
Yet he also spoke ahead of the Porto match about how he’s not interested in reading any negative press.
“The criticism from the press does not affect me personally because I am already a veteran, I’m more of an adult, but we have very young players,” he said.
“We have to know how to deal with pressure because only then will we achieve great things.”
Cancelo has previously been seen as something of a difficult character, perhaps highlighted by the fact both Manchester City and Bayern have allowed him to move on.
While there may be some truth in that, it’s also clear he can be a phenomenal footballer when everything fits into place and his mentality may be just what Barca need.
