Barça squad named for Lyon 1st leg

Ernesto Valverde has taken 21 players with him to France

The next Barcelona match is upon us! The Blaugrana start their journey in the Champions League knockouts with the Round of 16 first leg against Lyon, and Ernesto Valverde has called up the following 21 players for the trip to France:

Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 30. Iñaki Peña, 31. Jokin Ezkieta

Defenders: 2. Nélson Semedo, 3. Gerard Piqué, 15. Clément Lenglet, 17. Jeison Murillo, 18. Jordi Alba, 23. Samuel Umtiti, 40. Moussa Wagué

Midfielders: 4. Ivan Rakitic, 5. Sergio Busquets, 7. Philippe Coutinho, 20. Sergi Roberto, 22. Arturo Vidal, 26. Carles Aleñá

Forwards: 9. Luis Suárez, 10. Lionel Messi, 11. Ousmane Dembélé, 14. Malcom, 19. Kevin-Prince Boateng

As per usual in European trip, Valverde calls up more than just 18 to be in the squad, but three of the 21 cannot be in uniform and will be cut from the final matchday group when the team news are announced. Six players did not travel, however: Arthur (hamstring), Thomas Vermaelen (leg), Jasper Cillessen (calf) and Rafinha (knee) are out due to injury, while Jean-Clair Todibo and Sergi Samper miss out per the manager’s decision. The big news here is the return of Samuel Umtiti, who has finally been cleared to make his comeback after missing three months with a knee injury.

Predicted starting XI (4-3-3):

Ter Stegen; Roberto, Piqué, Lenglet, Alba; Rakitic, Busquets, Vidal; Messi, Suárez, Dembélé

The match kicks off at 9pm CET/WAT (Barcelona & Nigeria), 8pm GMT (UK), 3pm ET, 12pm PT (USA), 1.30am IST (India, Wednesday), and you can join our live blog to follow and comment all the action.
