As expected in a major final, ter Stegen had a busy night. He was forced into a few straightforward saves, but a couple of his stops were fantastic, even if one of them turned out to be pretty futile - I’m talking about the save preceding Alvaro Morata’s tap in goal in which the German brilliantly stopped Carlos Tevez’s attempt but couldn’t control the rebound. The second was an outstretched stop on Claudio Marchisio’s long range drive late in the game. Some nerves were seen ter Stegen’s game on several occasions, his passing wasn’t as crisp as usual and he wasn’t as comfortable in the air game. |

Usually Alves plays to hug the line and offers width, but in this one, especially in the first half, he often attacked through the middle, leaving either Suarez or Messi to attack the left-back – and it was a design that caught Juve unprepared and almost led to a quick two goal lead, but Alves’ shot from 18-yards out was excellently saved. While in a slightly different capacity, Alves constantly offered support in attack and had a solid day defensively. |

We’ve gotten accustomed to Pique upping his game on the biggest stage and in was no different in the Final. Throughout the game Pique was excellent positionally, which was especially noticeable in the air game where he was virtually unbeatable. There were some exceptions to his "excellent positioning", though there weren’t many, but one of them almost cost Barcelona late as he was left trailing the play on an excellent scoring chance for Roberto Pereyra. But it proved to be only a rare mistake as he maintain his concentration for the full 97 minutes, as evident by an excellent tackle on Fernando Llorente in the 93rd minute. |

To say that Mascherano had a rough start to the game would be an understatement. He started with a poor pass that led to a half-chance, gave up a silly corner just seconds later and about five minutes later was easily out-dribbled by Morata for another half-chance. That’s very uncharacteristic for El Jefecito and it turned out wrong shoes were at the major reason for those mistakes as after a quick pit stop Mascherano would have a nearly flawless game, highlighted by a diving play to clear the ball midway through the first half to defuse a dangerous situation that was brewing. |

Most of Alba’s contributions against Juventus came, rather surprisingly, on offense. Alba was constantly waiting for the opportunity to join his team in attack, and he often was successful in that area. His control of the ball on the left side proved to be one of the keys to leading to the opening goal of the game and he was later in thick of it on numerous counter attacks. He could’ve even finished one off had he not slipped in the most unfortunate of moments. Alba also set up an excellent chance for Neymar, and would’ve ended the game with an assist had Neymar been able to finish the play of with a simple header. Defensively Alba was far from perfect, but he still made invaluable contributions, none better than the one in the 87th minute when he pressured Pereyra enough for the Argentine to lose the ball. |

Often the overlooked man, it was Busquets’ work that maintained midfield superiority for his team. He had the highest pass success rate of any starting player and completed passes were only bettered by Lionel Messi and Dani Alves. This allowed space for the likes of Messi, Suárez and Neymar to get forward and get at the Juventus defence. For Barça’s defence Busquets was also strong, making two tackles and one interception to limit Juventus to few chances. |

It speaks volumes of Iniesta that he was the one to leave with the UEFA Man of the Match award and in doing so becomes the first player to win MoTM in finals of the World Cup, European Championships and the Champions League. He was sublime and he opened the game in the best possible way. In the lead up to the goal, he was being marked on the edge of the area but a clever look one way had the defender believing Iniesta wasn’t going to burst into the area. He did and the defender was on his heels, the Spaniard picked up the ball from Neymar before unselfishly passing the ball to his midfield partner Rakitić. From then on, he helped dictate play and stifle Juventus. He left the field on the 77th minute to be replaced by his longtime friend and teammate Xavi, knowing a fourth Champions League title was on the way. |

Often a player’s first Champions League final passes them by. The weight of the occasion and the magnitude of what’s on offer mean the emotions get to you and you don’t have as much as a influence as you usually do. This wasn’t the case for Ivan Rakitić. The Croatian started the game by opening the scoring, linking well with his midfield partner Iniesta before slotting the ball past Buffon. He could’ve also scored another in the second half when Luis Suárez tapped it in but Rakitić was happy enough to see the ball in the back of the net regardless of the scorer. He exited the field in the 90th minute looking like a man content with the shift and the performance he just put in. |

Scored Barca’s second with awareness, reactions and drive all on display in what proved to be the one that clinched the treble and the fifth European Cup. Suarez worked hard as ever and constantly pressed in order to try to create space and force an error or two. The Uruguayan missed a few chances to increase his tally but in the end more than justified his price tag. Suarez was replaced by Pedro in injury time. He has now won as many major trophies in the last nine months as he did in the rest of his nine-year career. He’s the perfect fit for Barca and vice-versa. What a signing he’s been. |

Outstanding. Not the best game he’s ever played but still easily the main difference between the two teams. Messi was a real threat whenever he was anywhere near the ball. Even though he didn’t score, Messi played a vital role in all the Barcelona goals. The Argentine played a wonderful cross-field pass to Alba in the run up to the first goal, it was his fairly poweful shot which led to the second goal and he passed it to Neymar in the build up to the third. He also completed no less than 10(!) dribbles against Juventus (in the Champions League final, no less). |

A constant threat and together with Alba made Stephan Lichtsteiner (one of the better right-backs in the world) seem rather average. His link-up play was brilliant throughout with most of his team-mates. Neymar played a key role for the first goal showing exemplary vision and awareness with a magnificent pass inside to Iniesta. The Brazilian star missed a few chances and had a goal controversially disallowed late in the second-half when the ball bounced off his hand before going in. In reality, he really should have put it away. Yet he did score Barcelona’s third with aplomb in a trademark counter-attacking move with what was the very last kick of the game. Neymar therefore finished as the joint-top goalscorer in the Champions League alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo with 10 goals each. What a season he’s had. |

With so many excellent performers it should come as no surprise that nobody really managed to separate themselves from the pack. Unlike on the UEFA website, it was Messi picked up the Man of the Match award, with the UEFA MotM, Iniesta (24%), finishing in second place. By just a couple of votes Neymar (14%) edged Rakitić for the last place on the podium. |
