The French defender wants to stay
Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet says he will still be at the club next season despite a rough 2020-21 campaign with the Catalan giants.
Lenglet is currently on international duty with France and spoke about his future amid speculation he could be deemed surplus to requirements, according to Eurosport.
“I do not see myself leaving,” he said. “I re-signed a new contract last season. I will be at Barça next season.”
The center-back also offered his thoughts on manager Ronald Koeman who is also set to stay on for a second season as coach.
“He did a good job in his first year. We had some somewhat complicated periods but also others with a quality of play, wins and a positive image. I hope that we will continue the work undertaken and progress next year. We are in the right direction.”
Lenglet was one of four Barcelona players to sign new deals in October 2020. The defender’s contract now runs until 2026 and contains a buyout clause set at €300 million.
However, a summer clearout is expected at Barcelona with new president Joan Laporta keen to trim the wage bill and raise some much-needed funds.
Lenglet may not be at the top of the list of players who Laporta wants to offload, but there’s no doub he had a really tough 2020-21 campaign and faces stiff competition for his place.
It will be interesting to see who Koeman goes for as his favored backline next season now Eric Garcia has arrived and with Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza pushing for spots.
