The Real Betis defender could be an option
FC Barcelona could be on the lookout for a new defender with the injury troubles plaguing Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen, and Marc Bartra is being linked as a possibility in the media.
Today, Mundo Deportivo argues that the Real Betis defender would be the ideal option for Barça. His release clause is 60 million euro, but there is a belief that he could be available for half of that. His profile would be a good fit for the team, being that he used to play at the Camp Nou and is a former academy player, as well.
While the report does not state any approach has materialized yet, it’s interesting to see Bartra being mentioned as an option in the papers in Catalonia.
He is getting call-ups to the Spanish national team, and he’s seemingly matured, to the point that he could be seen as a solid backup to Gerard Piqué - and some would argue even a starter soon.
But here’s the biggest problem: Barcelona want Matthijs de Ligt this summer. Unless Piqué, Umtiti, or Clément Lenglet leaves, Barcelona would have four defenders already, even assuming Vermaelen leaves. Would Barcelona keep 5 defenders for the foreseeable future? And especially: would Barcelona keep De Ligt, Bartra, and Piqué - all right footed - in the same team? On their wages?
Or if you can only pick Bartra or De Ligt, is picking Bartra prudent?
