Barcelona “optimistic” about signing newest French centerback prospect - report

Jean-Clair Todibo from Toulouse is the new hot commodity

FC Barcelona are again diving into the market that’s proven very fruitful lately, according to Mundo Deportivo. Barça have gotten great deals for Clément Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti in the last few years, so it’s not too surprising the team is looking at another French centerback - Tolouse’s Jean-Clair Todibo - as a possible reinforcement.

Todibo has chosen not to renew his contract with his club, an act that has made Tolouse send him to train with the reserves. L’Equipe informs that his mother told him he was not being valued enough at his current club, so he started looking at offers he received from clubs like Lyon, Napoli, Inter Milan, and Juventus, before Barcelona got into the mix.

The situation has drawn comparisons with that of another Frenchman that Barça is linked with, Adrien Rabiot of Paris Saint-Germain. In that case, his mother also reportedly told him not to renew and Barcelona have been rumored as a potential suitor. In Todibo’s case, unlike in Rabiot’s case, the mother is not also the agent. But she still apparently holds a lot of sway in the young man’s career choices.

MD writes that the teenage defender has the intention of taking a decision over his future in about a week, but in the meantime the culés remain upbeat about their chances of landing him.

Todibo turned 19 yesterday and has been capped by France at U-20 level. He was born in French Guiana and was previously a midfielder before becoming a defender. A product of Toulouse’s academy, Todibo scored his first professional goal against Stade Rennais in September, a late equalizer off a header in a 1-1 draw.
