They are in touch according to Catalunya Radio.
The always-reliable Catalunya Radio have reported FC Barcelona are in touch with former Paris Saint-Germain boss Laurent Blanc. Blanc used to manage the French national team as well as Bordeaux, but currently he is without a team.
Barça are known to be considering several options to replace Luis Enrique, including his second in command Juan Carlos Unzue, as well as Ernesto Valverde (Athletic Club Bilbao), Ronald Koeman (Everton), Eusebio Sacristan (Real Sociedad), Óscar García (Red Bull Salzburg) and Juan Antonio Pizzi (Chile.)
I have to ask: what do they see in Blanc? Now, I’ll be modest here and say that there are people who know the club and players much more intimately than me monitoring this situation and it’s entirely possible they see something I don’t. I’m quite aware in a year’s time I may indeed look like a fool doubting Blanc, the manager of Barcelona, as he wins a treble.
Now Robert and the FC Barcelona braintrust say they want a coach with Barça DNA, and indeed, Blanc did play one season at Barcelona under Bobby Robson.
But how important is that? Does the fact that he spent a year as a player in the 90s give him some amazing insight?
I get it with the likes of Koeman, former players who spent a long time at Barcelona... or even coached the B team in the case of Eusebio. But what does one single season help?
Blanc’s resume includes silverware with PSG, but did he ever prove himself as an elite manager given his squad? I don’t think he was bad, but he was fairly average as far as I’m concerned. It’s different when discussing coaches who have yet to really gotten a chance to show what they can do as the head coach of an elite squad... for example, Oscar Garcia or Unzue, or even Valverde. But we’ve seen Blanc with an elite team and it’s... underwhelming. Not bad, just not great.
There is a lot of division about who the coach should be among fans, especially since Jorge Sampaoli (Sevilla) seems out of the running. Garcia is the new fan favorite but it would take a lot of faith from the board to take the chance on him. It’s a big leap from managing in Austria to managing a superclub.
No one pick is a surefire hit, so we shouldn’t be too harsh on any one of them because in the end, there’s always the possibility that they will be precisely the perfect fit for the team.
But as it is right now, I don’t see the appeal of Blanc. But I want to hear from you. What do you guys think?
