Another final day miracle? Reasons Barcelona can still believe

History shows that stranger things have happened

It’s happened before – quite a lot actually

It’s not just happened before, it’s happened plenty of times before. Madrid will need no reminding of the two seasons in a row they lost to Tenerife on the final day (in 1992 and 1993) while Barcelona won their games allowing them to leapfrog los Blancos and take the title. It also happened in 1994 when Barca went into the final game a point behind Deportivo but emerged as champions. Barca also won the title twice in recent seasons on the final day, albeit they started the game a point ahead of Madrid, in 2010 when Madrid drew with, yep you’ve guessed it, Malaga and in 2016. Here’s hoping history repeats itself on Sunday.

Malaga are in decent form

Barcelona will know all about Malaga’s recent form, having slumped to a 2-0 defeat back in April. Michel’s side have won their last four home Liga games, beating both Barcelona and Sevilla along the way and have 10 wins from 18 Liga games at La Rosaleda this season. While Madrid while still be huge favourites to win the game, and indeed even a draw will be enough, Malaga could test any final day nerves Zinedine Zidane’s side may have.

‘Agent’ Sandro could help out Barcelona

Sandro Ramirez has already admitted he wants to score against Madrid on Sunday and help hand the title to Barcelona.

"Hopefully I can score and hand the title to Barcelona," he said.

"Hopefully it's a dream day. I owe them [Barca] everything."

The 21-year-old has 14 Liga goals this season and may well test Keylor Navas who has not kept a Liga clean sheet since the win over Real Sociedad all the way back in January.

Malaga have 600,000 reasons to win

On paper it looks as though Malaga have very little to play for, they go into the game in 11th place in the table, level on points with Valencia who welcome Villarreal to Mestalla on Sunday. Two points behind are Celta Vigo who also face a tough test on the final day against Real Sociedad. Should Malaga hold onto 11th place they will finish the season with an extra €600,000 in prize money, according to Marca, motivation indeed.

It’s been that kind of season

In many ways it’s been a funny old season and whoever does claim the title will be the team that made the least mistakes. Barcelona will probably feel they’ve thrown it away and point to damaging defeats to Alaves, Malaga and Deportivo. But no matter what happens on Sunday, the season will also be remembered for that comeback against PSG. A little bit like Sunday, going into that game, few people gave Barcelona a chance – and look how that turned out. There may not be much hope, but there is still some – Vamos Barca!
