Is this Neymar’s best ever season for Barcelona?

It’s not his most prolific season at Camp Nou but it’s his most inspirational

Neymar hit yet another first for Barcelona on Sunday as he wandered off the Las Palmas pitch with the match ball having hit his first ever away hat-trick for the Blaugrana - but is this the Brazilian’s best ever season at the club?

The statistics say no and indeed point to 2014-15 when he bagged 39 goals for the club as they picked up their second treble, winning La Liga by two points from Real Madrid and beating Juventus in the Champions League football.

This season may well only yield the Copa del Rey but there has been so much more than goals from Neymar. He has 20 assists in all competitions and broke the Champions League record for assists in a single season, back in March.

But despite the goals, the assists, the flair and the brilliance on the ball there has been criticism of the 25-year-old.

His temperament has been scrutinised, and rightly so after his red card against Malaga saw him suspended for El Clasico, while his obsession with changing his boots in three consecutive games left many supporters similarly unimpressed.

He’s also been accused of giving the ball away far too frequently and also hit a dry spell at the end of last year when he went three months with a league goal.

It’s not been all plain sailing for sure, but let’s not forget that whatever happens on Sunday, this season will always be remembered for that iconic game against PSG.

And that game against PSG, the greatest Champions League comeback the game has ever seen, when Neymar hauled his side back into the competition after they looked dead and buried belonged to the Brazilian and will live long in the history books.

Neymar, is in no doubt that he is enjoying his best ever season for the club but has vowed to become even better.

“This is a great season for me," he told France Football. "I even think I have had my best season since I arrived here.

"I do not know if I have reached a new level, it is hard to have that judgement when you are on the pitch.

"I have always had the same role from my arrival until today – it has not changed. I have always taken responsibility on this team and everyone knows their role.

"All I want to do is play with the best players in the world – and the best of all is Leo Messi.

"I dream of becoming the best. I think I can do it, but calmly and quietly – I am not in a hurry."

Neymar has certainly demonstrated this year he can take over from Lionel Messi when the great man eventually steps down and while this may well be his best season so far, the exciting news is that at just 25, there should be even better ones to come.
