Despite decreased playing time, the Barça legend will not leave this summer
Javier Mascherano wants to stay at Barcelona despite having his playing time diminished, according to a report in Mundo Deportivo.
The report says Mascherano wants to compete for minutes at the Camp Nou, rejecting multi-million dollar offers in orden to leave. He also thinks staying at Barça gives him the best chance at arriving at the 2018 World Cup in Russia in tip top shape.
The Argentine had been the subject of speculation, with teams such as Turkey’s Galatasaray and several Chinese clubs pitched as potential suitors. The fact that Mascherano was allowed to take (and score) a penalty was seen by some as perhaps a parting gift for the veteran.
Mascherano has seen Samuel Umtiti take his starting position in the heart of defense this season, perhaps permanently. But even so, El Jefecito can be the third choice center-back, as well as playing at right back or defensive midfielder.
In any case he'll still play a lot of minutes, even if not as much as in the past. And the Argentine national team doesn’t exclude players for not being regular starters for their clubs, with the likes of Sergio Romero being the No.1 keeper despite being a backup at Manchester United, for example.
The last reason for Mascherano staying is personal: he has recently had another baby with his wife, and moving to a faraway place where they don’t speak the language like China or Turkey could prove a burden to his family.
