João Cancelo plays as a forward, while Bellerín is not playing as much. That's weird...
Barcelona are in search of a new right-back, while they deal with internal problems on how to end the season with almost no right-backs left on the team.
Sergi Roberto is suspended for two out of the last three games, and his future seems to be mainly in midfield. Aleix Vidal is recovering from a long-term injury and it remains to be seen how he will play following his long layoff.
Sporting director Robert Fernández has two targets in mind to address the necessity in the position, but both are going through some werid stuff in the final stages of the season.
On the one hand, we have Valencia’s João Cancelo. The Portuguese is playing almost exclusively as a winger, with the emergence of, somewhat ironically, Martín Montoya at right-back. (Montoya is a former Barcelona player.)
Cancelo still occasionally plays right-back, and let’s be clear, Aleix Vidal also played as a right winger a lot before joining Barcelona, so it’s not exactly unprecedented. Still, it’s worrying.
Then we have Arsenal’s Hector Bellerín, a former La Masia graduate. Barcelona are interested in bringing him back to Catalonia, despite a hefty price tag.
But Arsene Wenger’s switch to a 3-4-3 system has thrown Bellerin’s spot in the team into a bit of chaos. Instead of being a regular starter, he’s an occasional one, and often playing as a wing-back, not a full-back.
Maybe the silver lining to all this is that their prices will come down, but there must be some who see these developments as warning signs to look elsewhere.
