Barça fans have been questioning why he was allowed to leave
It is hard to recall a greater full-back performance over two legs than Dani Alves against Monaco. Out of the four goals that Juventus scored over the two legs, Alves assisted three and scored the other. His goal was the highlight of his performance, a well-struck volley that kept low despite the power behind it.
One of the sticks used to beat Alves with during his Barcelona time was the inaccuracy of his crosses towards his final years but it is in this area where he has shone for Juve. Aided by the height advantage Mario Mandžukić and Gonzalo Higuaín have over Luis Suárez, Alves can now produce accurate whipped balls to the two attackers, a different skill than when he was required to find driven passes to the feet of Lionel Messi or Neymar.
He was also very accurate in all of his passing. With a success rate of 91%, only Paulo Dybala achieved a better accuracy score as a starter. The matches were a flashback to his Sevilla and early Barça days where despite playing wide on one side of the field, the game flowed through him. Every counter-attack, Alves was an option and his link-up play with Dybala was reminiscent of his time with Messi.
This article is not a lamentation of why did Barça let him go? More a celebration of what an outstanding player he is. These things happen in football and it is important to remember that these are human beings as well, not just names on a team sheet. Alves wasn’t happy so he left.
The man has a trophy cabinet bigger than a lot of clubs and is well on his way to adding three more to it this season. The thought of him coming face-to-face with another in-form full-back in Marcelo is a mouthwatering prospect and considering it will likely be Juve vs Madrid in the final, there will be many culés rooting for their old full-back.
