Which doesn’t by itself imply supporting independence...
FC Barcelona has waded into local politics by supporting a referendum on Catalan independence. The club is supporting the Pacte Nacional pel Referèndum and allowing the gathering of signatures in favor of such a course of action during matches.
Catalonia, despite being a part of Spain, has its own language, history, and culture. In recent years we have seen an increased push for Catalonia to leave Spain and become its own independent country again.
In 2014, there was a non-binding referendum asking people to vote whether Catalonia should be independent. The vote resulted in a resounding 81% in favor of leaving; however, turnout was 42%, so it’s not known exactly how the vote would have gone if the referendum was binding and more people voted.
There is a call to have a binding referendum this year, or perhaps soon afterward. The Spanish government opposes it, saying it is an unconstitutional vote. But many in Catalonia are ready to press on, and that seems to now include FC Barcelona.
It should be noted that being in favor of a referendum is not the same as being in favor of leaving. One could be against or neutral when it comes to independence, but still think it’s right and just to have a vote to allow the people of Catalonia to decide.
FC Barcelona has always been an important institution when it comes to Catalan identity, language and culture, which were repressed at different points in history, most recently during the reign of Francisco Franco. The commitment to the Catalan identity and to civil society is encapsulated in the slogan “mes que un club.”
