There are just two games to go in the Liga season, and FC Barcelona’s Leo Messi is comfortably poised in pole position in the race for the European Golden Shoe – an award he would inherit from team-mate Luis Suárez, winner in 2015/16. The Argentinian currently has 35 goals, and could win the title for an amazing fifth time if he can hold off the challenge from Sporting Lisbon’s Bas Dost, who has 31 goals so far.

Despite being with the club for just under three seasons, Luis Suárez is on the brink of entering FC Barcelona’s Top 10 goalscorers list. The Uruguayan has 119 goals for Barça and is currently in 14th place on the all-time list. He has already surpassed former greats Jose Mari Bakero (94), Ronaldinho Gaúcho (95), Asensi (103) and his current boss Luis Enrique Martínez (111).

The Brazil international sat down with La Liga World ahead of Sunday's match with Las Palmas live on Sky Sports 5, which Barcelona need to win to maintain their charge for the league trophy. Last week, Barca announced the opening of an academy in Chicago, following the previous launch of schools in Austin, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; northern Virginia and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The 29-year-old was handed a four-match ban in March for verbally abusing an official in Argentina’s World Cup qualification win over Chile. He subsequently sat out their defeat to Bolivia before FIFA overturned his ban which Maradona disagrees with as he’s led to believe insulting a linesman carries a two-match ban.

The season is drawing to a close for the Barça youth teams, and with most of them battling for silverware, top class goals are also coming thick and fast at the business end of their respective competitions.
