Player ratings for Barcelona’s big win against Villarreal
Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Not the best game for young ter Stegen as he uncharacteristically often looked unsure with the ball and made a couple errant runs out of the box. Could do little about Bakambu’s (then) equalizer, but pundits will claim that a goalkeeper should never be beaten to the near post. Otherwise had a pretty quiet game as he made three saves.

Again Roberto showed that he can be a force going forward, but his weaknesses were on display on defense, even though Villarreal didn’t often test him. Roberto was the player that played Bakambu onside on Villarreal’s only goal. On offense it was a completely different story as he was often plenty involved in the final third and picked up an assist on Suarez’s tally.

Samuel Umtiti
As has been the case basically throughout the season, Umtiti was again Barcelona’s most sure-footed defender and held his concentration for the full 90 minutes. His defensive skills were on display as he was prepared for whatever Villarreal threw at him. At only 23 and in his debut season Umtiti has a very bright Barcelona future ahead of him.

Gerard Pique
Continues to suffer from the obligatory lapse of concertation at least once per game, most notably when he allowed Bakambu position to carry the ball over half of the pitch for the goal - although he wasn’t helped much by Roberto’s positioning. Otherwise wasn’t tested much, but was mostly up to the task.

Lucas Digne
Digne hasn’t seen much of the pitch over the last two and a half months - this was just his third appearance during that time span, and the rust was clearly showing. The effort and energy were clearly there, but the end product was lacking as he at times wasn’t on the same page with his teammates. Was let down by his touch on a couple other occasions to cap of a below-par showing. Digne was seen with an ice-pack on his hamstring after he was subbed off midway through the second half.

Not a vintage Busquets display as he uncharacteristically managed to misplace some passes deep in the Barcelona area in the first half. He was much more no-nonsense after the break as he did well to help Barcelona control the ball and keep Villarreal at bay.

Ivan Rakitić
It could be said that Rakitić was frustrated offensively by a congested midfield and he could do little to help Barcelona create chances. But Rakitić’s value was again on display in defense where he worked tirelessly to help Barcelona hold the Yellow Submarine to just a single goal.

Andres Iniesta
A performance very similar to Iniesta’s aforementioned teammate from Croatia. Iniesta rarely misplaced a pass, but he too could do little to help his side create chances. While he did fire off two shots most of value came from being able to hold possession and help out effectively in defense.

Neymar
Impressive showing on the left wing by Neymar who brought with him a bag-full of tricks, flicks and moves, making life miserable for the right side of the Villareal defense, especially Mario. Still, there were plenty of turnovers again for the Brazilian. However, Neymar managed to create a couple of scoring chances and bagged himself a goal with a close range finish. But his finishing can still improve as he wasted a clear cut scoring chance in the second half.

Luis Suarez
A performance very similar to the one against Espanyol the previous week as one would find it difficult to find the Uruguayan on the pitch until he pounced with a lovely move and strike midway through the second half to put the game out of reach. Was also involved in the build-up to Barcelona’s opener, but was otherwise hard to spot.

Messi needs only so much space to hurt you and he showed it again in the dying moments of the first half when he restored Barcelona’s lead with a lovely piece of skill and a shot that had no chance of being stopped. Added an insurance goal late in the game with a brilliantly taken penalty kick to cap of a game in which he linked excellently with his teammates. Wasn’t officially credited with an assist, but his blocked shot/pass was instrumental in Neymar’s goal.

Saw just over a quarter of an hour of action, but apart from a couple runs down the left side he wasn’t involved much.

Made just a handful of touches after he came on the pitch in place of Roberto.

Andre Gomes
Came on in the very end and wasn’t given enough time to make a difference.

Team
Arguably the most difficult game left on the Barcelona schedule and the Catalans passed it with flying colors. It wasn’t without difficult moments, but overall it was more than enough to brush aside a very difficult Villarreal side.

Left nothing to chance as Barcelona had to keep pressure on Real Madrid. Fielded just about his best team, but gave a rare opportunity to the all but forgotten Digne. The team lacked some creativity in the first half, but looked much better after the break, so the halftime talk had to have done some good.

Man of the Match - Lionel Messi
Once again you could make a case that Messi was the key difference maker for Barcelona, even though Neymar had an excellent game on the left wing. Messi’s strike just before the halftime whistle made a massive change in way the game was played after the break, and made an even bigger impact on the second half morale of both teams.
