He signed an extension with Barça, but Neymar could have been in Paris by now
Neymar Jr. will return to Barcelona this week after the completion of the international break, but he could have been headed to France.
The Brazilian superstar was on the verge of joining Paris Saint-Germain, but eventually decided to sign a two-year extension with Barça that will keep him at the club until 2020, his agent Wagner Ribeiro revealed in an interview with ESPN Brazil.
The numbers of the transfer are astonishing. PSG would activate Neymar's €190 million release clause, which would be the biggest transfer fee paid in history — Paul Pogba just moved to Manchester United for a little over €100 million. Even more impressive than the transfer itself is Neymar's contract. The Brazilian would be paid a whopping €40 million per year on a five-year deal, which would more than double the highest salary in football, which belongs to Neymar's teammate Lionel Messi.
But according to Ribeiro, while he was very tempted by the offer, Neymar decided to stay at Barça because that was his "dream club", in Wagner's words. The Brazilian loves Barça's style and the family environment free of egos that he enjoys in Catalonia. And even though Neymar's contract is very good (a reported €17 million/year), it's not even close to what he would make in Paris, but he wasn't planning on trading his Barça success for money.
