UEFA assign referee for Champions League match between Barcelona and Borussia Mönchengladbach

One of the top referees in Europe takes care of a big game for Barça

We have an official whistle blower for the next Barcelona match in Europe.

The European Federation announced that Damir Skomina from Slovenia has been appointed as the match official for the UEFA Champions League clash between Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Barcelona on Wednesday night, at Borussia-Park in Germany. This will be Skomina's second Champions League assignment this season (Celtic 5-2 Hapoel Beer Sheva).

The 40-year-old has become one of the top referees in Europe over the last few years. Skomina has been assigned for some of the biggest European matches for club and country competitions, including four games in EURO 2016, one of those being the quarterfinal between Wales and Belgium. He was also the referee in England's humiliating loss to Iceland in the same tournament.

In the Champions League, Skomina took care of the semifinal second leg between Real Madrid and Manchester City at Santiago Bernabéu last April, one of six European Cup games he officiated in the 2015/16 season. He also was the referee in a group stage match involving Barça's opponent, Gladbach, who beat Sevilla in a game overseen by Skomina.

The Slovenian has officiated a Barça match before, and it is one the Catalan giants don't want to remember: it was the second leg of the 2013 semifinal, and the Blaugranes were demolished by Bayern Munich, who won 3-0 at Camp Nou and clinched a place in the Final that season.

So Skomina refereed a Gladbach win last season, and his only Barça game was a loss to a German team. Yeah, we're in trouble.
