Following the departure of Dani Alves, it comes as no surprise that Barcelona have reportedly intensified the search for his replacement
When the concept of karma was first introduced, I sincerely doubt that it was believed that it would apply to a sport called football some hundreds of years later, but here we are. We're deep into silly season, and if you can believe it the transfer window hasn't even officially opened yet. But technicalities be damned, media outlets have papers to sell and websites to drive traffic to, so here's another twist in the ongoing Hector Bellerin saga.
In case you're unfamiliar with the background, Bellerin is a Catalan who started his footballing education at La Masia with FC Barcelona. Back in 2011, at the tender age of 16, Bellerin was approached by Arsenal who wished to procure his services and he accepted. Given the legal landscape in Catalunya and Spain as a whole, Barcelona were unable to match Arsenal's offer of an offical contract, so Bellerin left and continued his progression in England.
Of course, recently he's broken into the Arsenal first team and established himself as their first-choice right-back, and one of the hottest young defensive talents. With Dani Alves leaving the Camp Nou this summer, it's become painfully obvious that Barcelona are in need of a replacement, so it's natural that Bellerin has been linked.
If recent reports are to be believed, which they probably shouldn't, as they originate in El Confidencial, an outlet hardly renowned for their traditional reporting skills, then Barcelona have been in contact with Bellerin directly about a potential transfer. According to El Confidencial, Real Madrid were also going to sign Neymar in January, so there's some context for their reporting credentials -- but nevertheless, the English press and Arsenal fans have jumped on the rumour, taking it as proof of Barcelona's continuing underhanded tactics.
I mean, it's not like they contacted Bellerin behind our backs when they first signed him, right?
Leaving all that aside, I'd question whether this is even the right move for the club to be making. Alves is irreplaceable, and subbing in a player who shares many similar traits to Jordi Alba isn't likely to be conducive to success. Let's watch this space -- I have a feeling this is going to drag on all summer long.
