Euro 2016: 12 June 2016: Live Open Thread

Open thread for Euro 2016 matches played on 12 June 2016

After an exciting day of football that saw Switzerland barely edge Albania despite playing more than a half with a man advantage, Wales earn a historic first European Championship win - against Slovakia, and England, well, pull an England, allowing a last minute equalizer to Russia after dominating for the most part of the match.

Today promises to feature plenty of excitement as well. The day will kick off at the Parc des Princes where FC Barcelona set to have two players in action, one on each side, with Arda Turan playing for Turkey and Ivan Rakitić for Croatia. Croatia still have some unfinished business with the Turks at the Euro, as Turkey eliminated Croatia in the quarter-final of Euro 2008 even though Croatia took the lead in the 119th minute of the match.

Next up is probably the least anticipated match of the day, as Poland will try to start the tournament in a positive way against Northern Ireland at Stade de Nice. Poland will look to carry their European qualifiers scoring form into the main competition - they scored 33 goals in the qualifiers, more than any other team, and if Poland, led by Robert Lewandowski, can carry that form into the group stage they are a strong bet to make their first ever trip into the knockout phase of the competition. For Northern Ireland the game against Poland will mark their Euro debut.

The match-day will conclude at Stade Pierre-Mauroy near Lille where Ukraine will attempt to upset one of the tournament favorites, Germany. The World Champions will look to extend their four-game unbeaten run against Ukraine in competitive games in hopes to start the competition with three points that would start a winning run ending with Germany's first Euro title since 1996. The German squad also includes a Barcelona player, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but he's unlikely to feature.
