ESPN snubs Leo Messi in favor of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez

With two major international tournaments coinciding this summer, one involving Argentina and the other involving Portugal, the Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi debate has been reignited.

ESPN have made their voice known with their 2016 ESPY nominations. The nominees for the "Best International Athlete" category includes two footballers. One of which is Cristiano Ronaldo while the other is Barcelona striker and Pichichi winner, Luis Suarez.

The other three nominees are tennis star Novak Djokovic, LPGA star Lydia Ko, and boxer Canelo Alvarez.

Absent from the nominee list is reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, Lionel Messi.

This doesn't really make much sense at all. ESPN are basically claiming they know more about the sport than the cast of legends and important dignitaries who voted for Messi on the Ballon d'Or ballot.

Anyone who's ever watch ESPN programming probably isn't surprised by this lack of soccer knowledge. I mean come on:

Their soccer takes are about as interesting and meaningful as my takes on Broadway musicals. I wouldn't mind watching one every once in a while, but I'm not about to put together the Tony awards nominee list.
