It was a great match, though.
Even without Lionel Messi, Argentina steamrolled past Germany in a rematch of the World Cup final, winning 4-2 in convincing fashion. True, the Germans had only three players that started that match at Maracanã two months ago, but the Albiceleste still managed to destroy the hosts without their biggest star.
That's because they had their second biggest star this time around. Ángel Di María absolutely owned the match, doing everything he wanted and almost toying with the opponent's defense. Argentina went up 4-0, with the now Manchester United player assisting the first three and scoring his own golazo:
In terms of Barcelona players, we saw Javier Mascherano being at his usual dominant self. The Little Sheriff did an amazing job of containing Germany's attacks and open plays, and he controlled the team as the captain. Tata Martino showed signs of doing a version of what he tried to do at Barça. Without the pressure of coaching the best team in the world, the new Argentine boss might have more success, especially when Messi is able to join the team.
As of right now, the Albiceleste got a little taste of revenge.
