Official: Luis Suárez suspended two games for Espanyol match incidents

The intense and nervous Copa del Rey match between Barcelona and Espanyol certainly had post-match repercussions, and a bad one for the Blaugrana.

Striker Luis Suárez, who got a yellow card and was one of the most involved parties in Wednesday's war, was suspended by the Spanish Federation for two games for alleged racial slurs against midfielder Pape Diop after the match.

Barcelona released a statement early Friday, announcing both the ban and the appeal the club will take to overturn the decision:

FC Barcelona received notification on Friday from the Spanish Football Federation that striker Luis Suárez was to face a two-match suspension for taking part incidents between players from Barça and Espanyol in the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms following Wednesday's Copa del Rey last 16 first leg at Camp.

FC Barcelona will immediately proceed to appeal the ban. If the sanction holds up, Suárez would miss the return leg next Wednesday and a hypothetical first leg of the quarter-finals, should Barça qualify.

In the appeal, FC Barcelona is expected to argue that the player, as he later stated, did not use the allegedly offensive words that were attributed to him in the referee's official notes following the match.

The Blaugranes won the first leg of the Spanish Cup Round of 16 4-1, and the second leg, which will happen at the Cornellá Stadium next week, is already being talked about. If the suspension holds, Barça will have to go without one 'MSN' member.
