UEFA Champions League: BATE Borisov 0-2 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's Champions League win match against BATE.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen
6.8
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 30
Passes: 20
Pass Accuracy: 100%
Shots Faced: 1
Saves Made: 1
Clearances: 0

Bostjan says: 7.0

It would be difficult to imagine a less exciting game for ter Stegen who was largely a spectator throughout. Had to make just a single save, a very simple one, midway through the second half, earning himself a rare clean sheet. Once again the highlight of the young German's game was his passing as he didn't misplace a single one.

Dani Alves
7.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 113
Passes: 95
Pass Accuracy: 93%
Key Passes: 3
Turnovers: 4
Tackles: 1
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/1
Clearances: 1
Aerial Duels Won: 3
Interceptions: 2

Bostjan says: 7.0

Defensively Alves had very little to do as BATE rarely attacked, so the Brazilian mostly focused on his attacking game. He offered good width to Barcelona's attack and provided some dangerous balls to his teammates, trailing only Neymar in the number of key passes, though none of Alves' were converted for goals.

Gerard Pique
6.9
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 94
Passes: 88
Pass Accuracy: 90%
Tackles: 0
Interceptions: 0
Clearances: 2
Aerial Duels Won: 2

Bostjan says: 7.0

A step in the right direction for Pique who has made a few consecutive sup-par appearances. Granted, BATE's attack isn't as formidable as some of those Barcelona faced recently, but helping his team get a clean sheet will surely do wonders for his confidence.

Marc Bartra
7.5
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 89
Passes: 71
Pass Accuracy: 93%
Tackles: 1
Interceptions: 4
Clearances: 4
Aerial Duels Won: 3
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Bostjan says: 7.5

Is it a coincidence that Barcelona's defense looked the best in some time in the game that featured Bartra? It might be, and it might be the aforementioned poor BATE attack, but Bartra yet again put in a very good showing for Barcelona, leading the team in won aerial duels - he was a threat in that facet of the game on both ends of the pitch - and clearances.

Jordi Alba
7.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 108
Passes: 98
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 2
Clearances: 0
Key Passes: 1
Turnovers: 1

Bostjan says: 7.0

Playing a role very similar to Alves, focusing little on defense and offering plenty of width in attack, always providing a passing option for Neymar. Finished the game with strong passing numbers, especially considering how many passes came in BATE's defensive zone. Looked good defensively when counted upon.

Javier Mascherano
7.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 109
Passes: 98
Pass Accuracy: 87%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 4
Interceptions: 2
Clearances: 0
Turnovers: 1
Aerial Duels Won: 3
Key Passes: 1
Fouls Won: 3

Sam says: 8.0

Mascherano took on the majority of the midfield defence. Patrolling the back to ensure that if a BATE attack did break out, it was quickly put to bed. His four tackles and two interceptions ensured Barcelona kept a rare clean sheet. He was also very strong passing wise, completing the joint most of any player on the pitch and with an accuracy of 87%.

Sergio Busquets 7.6
Minutes played: 72
Touches: 77
Passes: 64
Pass Accuracy: 92%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0
Turnovers: 2
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 2
Interceptions: 7

Sam says: 7.5

BATE offered very little going forward, particularly in the first half, which meant Busquets had little in terms of defending to do. Coupled with the fact that Mascherano also started, this allowed Busquets to focus on his attacking game which he did well in. Creating two good chances and also having two shots himself, he helped probe at a stubborn BATE defence. As usual his passing was also excellent.

Sergi Roberto
6.7
Minutes played: 17
Touches: 15
Passes: 11
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Fouls Won: 0
Turnovers: 1
Successful Dribbles: 0
Key Passes: 1
Tackles: 1

Sam says: 7.0

A disappointing game for Roberto in which he had to retire early due to injury. Before his injury, he was playing well, linking with his midfield partners and looking to get forward whenever possible but his game was ended prematurely in the 17th minute.

Munir El Haddadi
6.2
Minutes played: 69
Touches: 41
Passes: 27
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1
Turnovers: 5
Successful Dribbles: 0
Key Passes: 0
Fouls Won: 1
Tackles: 5

Bostjan says: 7.0

It might sound a little bit funny, but Munir reminded me of Pedro a little bit in this one. He was constantly on the run from one end to the other, was unable to really trouble the goalkeeper and was excellent defensively., leading the team in tackles.

Luis Suarez
6.9
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 42
Passes: 24
Pass Accuracy: 63%
Shots/Shots on Target: 3/1
Fouls Won: 2
Successful Dribbles: 2
Key Passes: 1
Turnovers: 2
Tackles: 2

Bostjan says: 7.0

The instincts still aren't quite there for the Uruguay international. He linked up well with his teammates, but the finishing touch was missing - either to finish the play himself or supply the ball to one of his teammates for the simple finish.

Neymar
8.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 103
Passes: 64
Pass Accuracy: 81%
Shots/Shots on Target: 5/1
Successful Dribbles: 7
Key Passes: 8
Tackles: 1
Turnovers: 1

Bostjan says: 9.0

Neymar was once again leading the charge for Barcelona. Like against Rayo Vallecano over the weekend, the Brazilian was the biggest threat for the opposition, finishing the game with an astounding eight key passes and seven successful dribbles. He finished the game with two assists, but he unable to continue his scoring run.

Ivan Rakitić
8.5
Minutes played: 73
Touches: 85
Passes: 73
Pass Accuracy: 90%
Shots/Shots on Target: 3/2

Kevin says: 8.0

Entered the fray in place of Sergi Roberto in the 18th minute. He's not been his excellent self of late having turned in another sub-par display over the weekend. What a time to turn things around! A pair of world class finishes in the second half reminded us exactly why our beloved Croatian was shortlisted for the Ballon D'or. Stick around, Ivan. We missed you.

Gerard Gumbau
4.6
Minutes played: 18
Touches: 15
Passes: 13
Pass Accuracy: 100%
Key Passes: 1

Kevin says: 5.0

I'm not a fan of criticizing professional footballers infinitely more talented than me, nor do I enjoy questioning world class managers who've forgotten more about football than I'll likely ever learn. With that said, it's becoming increasingly confusing to see Gumbau brought into the action as the weeks go by. Looked keen to press the Bate players when the ball was close to him, so much so he got himself booked. Aside from a clear enthusiasm though, once again he contributed little.

Sandro Ramirez
5.8
Minutes played: 21
Touches: 13
Passes: 6
Pass Accuracy: 100%
Tackles: 2

Kevin says: 5.0

Brought on with 20 to play as a substitute for his hapless counterpart Munir El Haddadi. With every week that passes in Messi's absence, you can't help but pine for Pedro somewhat. A positive point for Sandro was out-muscling a Bate midfielder to repossess the ball and feed Suarez who then crossed for Neymar. It just doesn't seem to be coming together for him though, whether coming off the bench or being given a start.

The Team 7.8
Passes: 775
Pass Accuracy: 89%
Shots/Shots on Target: 21/6
Tackles: 24
Aerial Battles Won: 69%
Fouls Won/Committed: 20/6

Bostjan says: 7.0

A thoroughly professional job by Barcelona to extend their lead in Group E of the Champions League in what could've been a difficult away game. The attack, most notably the deadliness in front of goal, continues to be a work in progress, but the defense showed signs of improvement. The win did come at a price though, the injury to Roberto, but his absence will be only short term.

Luis Enrique
7.7

Kevin says: 7.0

Defensive solidity was the number one priority tonight and the team delivered for the manager. Bartra looked like the ideal dancing partner for Piqué which should delight most. Perhaps the dropping, albeit extremely briefly, of Rakitic, lit a fire under an under-performing midfielder. Up front the options alongside the bi-dente seem extremely limited. It now seems that he can choose freely between Sandro and Munir without the burden of wondering which of them is actually going to perform to Barcelona standards. A solid away win and he returns home at the top of the group.

MOTM - Neymar
54%

Bostjan says: Neymar

From the beginning this was a two horse race, with Neymar storming to victory in the end. Despite scoring two goals, Rakitić had to settle for second place with 34% of the votes. Rounding up the top three was, perhaps mockingly, was Gumbau with 3%.
