UEFA appoint referee for Barcelona's Champions League game against BATE

We officially have a whistle-blower for Barcelona's next game.

UEFA have announced the officials for the Champions League encounter between BATE Borisov and Barcelona on Tuesday night in Belarus. Manuel Jorge Sousa will be the man in charge. The 40-year-old Portuguese man is a FIFA referee since 2006, yet is an unexperienced referee when it comes to European Cup games.

He's a regular at Europa League matches, having officiated eight just last season, including knockout stage matches involving important teams like Everton and Zenit. However, he'll only referee his fifth match in Champions League competition, and this will be just his second group stage game in UEFA's biggest tournament. Curiously enough, his first and only group phase match so far involved Barça's biggest rivals, Real Madrid, who beat Ajax 3-0 in 2011.

Sousa is not a fan of distributing cards, with only 201 yellows and 11 reds over 53 international matches, an average of less than four bookings per game. It's a bit worrying that such an experienced referee will oversee a match involving the current Champions League winners, but his stats suggest he's a solid official, plus it's likely to be an easy game in the discipline side.

Don't screw up, Sousa.
