Finding a way out is proving very difficult
Samuel Umtiti has been linked with a Barcelona exit for a long time now with reports even suggesting the Catalans were willing to rip up his contract.
However, the latest updates suggest that Umtiti could end up staying at Barcelona after all because it’s simply too difficult for the club to offload the center-back.
Diario Sport reckon that Barca are “no longer” ruling out the possibility that Umtiti will continue at the Camp Nou and be Ronald Koeman’s fifth center-back for 2021-22.
There have been no takers for the World Cup winner and Barca feel he could stay “due to the possible legal problems that could arise by terminating the player’s contract.”
The report adds that Umtiti doesn’t want to leave and would only go to a club able to offer Champions League football for next season.
There’s a similar article in Marca who also reckon Umtiti is going nowhere and is “most likely” to stay with Barcelona for at least one more season.
Marca’s report claims Barca have presented “several proposals” to Umtiti but he’s not interested and “believes that he can be useful” to Barca.
The Catalans have also considered terminating his contract but feel it’s “legally unfeasible” as it could have “serious consequences for the club.”
Yet if he does stay on then Barca will try to convince Umtiti to reduce his salary. Marca reckon Umtiti currently earns “between 8 and 9 million net per season.”
