The youngster’s father has confirmed his decision
Ilaix Moriba has been making plenty of headlines this summer and is in the news again after deciding to represent Guinea rather than Spain.
The midfielder has played for Spain at youth level and had been expected to continue with La Roja but has now decided he will represent Guinea, the country of his birth, going forwards instead.
Moriba could therefore be called up for World Cup qualifiers later this week with Guinea set to play Morocco and Guinea Bissau in September.
Moriba’s father confirmed his son’s decision on Saturday to Cadena SER ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga clash with Athletic at San Mames.
Meanwhile, fresh reports regarding Moriba’s future at Barcelona have emerged over the weekend after criticism from Ronald Koeman at his pre-match press conference.
Barca are said to be unwilling to let Moriba leave for less than €20m and plan to put him in the stands if he is not sold and does not renew. The Catalan giants will also demote Moriba further and send him to train with Juvenil B.
Vice-president Rafa Yuste also spoke about Moriba before kick-off.
“If Ilaix Moriba doesn’t change his position, he won’t have a future at this club. I think he is wrong,” he said. “It is very important that this message reaches all the youngsters at the club, at this difficult moment for the club. They must realise money is not everything, and they must be excited to play for FC Barcelona.”
