As has been rumored, the two captains have accepted lower pay to help Barcelona register Sergio Agüero
FC Barcelona has confirmed that Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have accepted wage cuts in order to help them register Sergio Agüero under La Liga’s salary cap rules.
Busquets and Alba are two of the team’s four captains and are products of Barcelona’s academy.
The pair join Gerard Piqué, who was the first of the team’s captains to accept a wage cut. Without the defender accepting a lower salary, Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, and Rey Manaj would not have been registered as Barcelona players.
The Catalans have been caught in a financial crisis after years of mismanagement under Josep Maria Bartomeu were exacerbated by the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to salary cap rules, Barcelona were unable to renew Lionel Messi’s contract.
Agüero is currently injured so registering him at the start of the season was not a priority. However, he would have been unable to take part even when fit again if not for the pair making a sacrifice.
Sergi Roberto, the team’s third captain, has also been rumored to be willing to accept a lower salary. However, there is still no official confirmation. Other players, such as Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanić, have been linked with salary cuts.
