Barcelona 2016/17 Review: Player of the Season

A.K.A.: The Messi Article

The final installment of Barça Blaugranes' review of Barcelona's season focuses on the best player, the one who performed incredibly throughout the campaign and managed to shine during a quite mediocre season at the Camp Nou.

I'm not stupid, so I won't spend almost 1000 words on this: we all know it's Lionel Messi. He always is better than everybody else, but he was REALLY better than everybody else this season.

Yes, there are two other options for you to choose: Samuel Umtiti was an incredible signing, and Marc-André ter Stegen established himself as one of Europe's top goalkeepers and silenced 99.9% of his critics. But Messi was far better than anyone else, easily.

Leo was the top scorer in La Liga, reached 50 goals in all competitions once again and won El Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu and gave us the greatest celebration in history.

Messi is the best footballer of all generations, and after all that he's done, he manages to get better and impress us all with his magical abilities, in a season where it would be acceptable if Messi wasn't at his best, because the team was quite poor and didn't help him. It doesn't work this way with Messi.

Leo won Barça's only trophy, the Copa del Rey, all by himself, and in a poor season from the team, he set the bar really high once again and was without a doubt the best player in a Blaugrana shirt.

Instead of being sad and angry about a certain team winning a certain title today, let's use this as an opportunity to praise the world's best player. He might not be lifting a trophy this weekend, but his legacy is untouched and his career is already better than anyone else's. Ever.

Here's to you, Leo. We love you. Thanks for playing for us.
