The Frenchman is back at the Camp Nou again
Barcelona have confirmed that Eric Abidal has returned to the club and will work as an ambassador for the next few years.
Abidal spent six successful years at the club helping the Blaugrana win the Champions League twice and La Liga four times during his stay.
During his time at Barca, the popular Frenchman was forced to undergo a liver transplant after a tumour was discovered but managed to return to playing before retiring in 2014.
The club is now able to welcome him and have outlined the role they now envisage him playing at Camp Nou.
"The 37-year-old, who appeared in the recent Barça Legends game against Real Madrid in Beirut, will now form a permanent part of the globetrotting veterans team, as well as collaborating with institutional events in liaison with the Social Area and assisting with activities related with the FCBEscola soccer schools," read a statement on the club’s website.
"He will always be fondly remembered here at the Camp Nou, and it is with great joy that we can welcome now him back to the club in a permanent capacity."
Abidal, meanwhile, revealed his delight at taking up his new role at the club where he enjoyed so much success.
"It makes me really happy to be back as a part of the club, officially," Abidal added
"We have been talking for a long time and today was the day. As ambassador I will try and present the club in the best way possible.
"I think the values and the message of the club are very important. It's an honour to represent the club and spread this message."
