Barcelona aren’t even looking at La Masia, says Grimaldo

The defender has aimed a dig at his former club

Alex Grimaldo says Barcelona no longer look to La Masia and feels the club are guilty of allowing players to leave who are good enough to make the grade at Camp Nou.

The left-back had been tipped to break into the first team after captaining the Barcelona B side but ultimately opted to move to Benfica in December 2015.

A combination of injury and the presence of Jordi Alba prevented Grimaldo from making a single first-team appearance but he feels it is even harder to make the step up now.

“It’s always been hard to get into Barca’s first team, but now the club aren’t even looking at their ‘academy’,” he told Portuguese newspaper O Jogo.

“The players who leave are good enough to stay there."

Grimaldo has largely impressed during his time in Portugal which has led to speculation he could move on this summer, and there have been claims he could return to Barca.

While that looks a little unlikely he has refused to guarantee he will remain at Benfica, with Manchester City another club who have been credited with interest in the defender.

"I can not say that I will 100 percent continue at Benfica, although I do have a contract," he added. "Whatever happens, will happen.

"I'm focused on the U21 team, I had an injury ruled me out for the middle of the season but I'm happy with how I've played and the level that I've given."

Is Grimaldo right? Have Barcelona lost faith in La Masia? Are too many good players being allowed to leave? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
