The Juventus midfielder has emerged as a target
Barcelona’s pursuit of Marco Verratti looks set to be a long, possibly frustrating, and potentially very messy transfer saga that will probably dominate the headlines all summer long.
Will they get their man? It's difficult to say at this point. Verratti seems keen, Barca seem keen but PSG definitely do not want to sell and the midfielder is contracted until 2021.
If Verratti can convince PSG to let him go then Barcelona will have to spend big, with speculation claiming he will cost at least €100, which let's face it, is a huge amount.
Time for a Plan B? Well, maybe, Jean Seri has also been mentioned, but interestingly Mundo Deportivo have come up with yet another option today, Miralem Pjanic.
The report claim Barca have long been admirers of the 27-year-old but that interest has deepened as Pjanic has developed under Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus.
Apparently Robert Fernandez and the coaching staff have been most impressed with the improvement in his defensive qualities.
This, coupled with his technical ability, organisation, set-piece ability and excellent assists make Barca feel he could well be a viable, and undoubtedly cheaper, option that Verratti.
Pjanic weighed in with eight goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Juve last season which unsurprisingly is better than Verratti's three goals and five assists.
Of course, there's still the question of whether Pjanic could be tempted away from Juventus, but with all the uncertainty surrounding Verratti, it's interesting to hear of potential alternatives.
What do you think of Pjanic? Would he be a better option that Verratti? Let us know who you think Barca should sign this summer!
