Barcelona 2016-17 Season Grades: Forwards

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar. Oh, and Paco.

Lionel Messi

What can you say? Messi won the Pichichi award and did so playing quite often as a midfielder rather than forward. He put in some iconic performance, most notably one capped off by a last gasp winner against Real Madrid. He also scored loads in the Champions League, although if you do want to grasp onto criticism, you could say that he did not contribute goals in the knockout stages. That said, this was another absolutely brilliant season.

Grade: A+

Luis Suarez

He scored a ton - second in the league, in fact, in front of Cristiano Ronaldo. However his dip in form at a crucial point of the season was quite notable, right around the time of the Juventus tie and the second Clasico. If you want to be harsh, you can be, expectations on him were massive. On the other hand, if you look at his season as a whole, can you really complain that much?

Grade: A-

Neymar

He didn’t score as many but his influence on the team grew. Still, his finishing at points left something to be desired, not to mention his attitude. Getting sent off against Malaga - a loss that more or less cost Barcelona the league - was extremely foolish. Some of his decision making is suspect. Neymar is young, but we are getting to the point of his career where that will no longer be an excuse. However, his brilliance on the field was evident. At his age and below, there simply isn’t anyone more talented or better.

Grade: A

Paco Alcacer

Paco was given a rough task, to adapt into Barcelona playing mainly garbage time, often with other substitutes rather than the main team. At first he looked absolutely lost, not to mention on a severe scoring drought. It took him a long time, but he looked consistently more comfortable the more time went on, and the goals and assists started to flow. Still, his middling performance in el Clasico showed us he does not really belong at that level quite yet. I expect next season he will continue to improve.

Grade: C+

Munir El Haddadi

He made two substitute appearances and one start before being loaned out.
