Spain 8-0 Liechtenstein, Match Report: Too easy

No trouble for Spain

There was a clear job to do for Spain in their opening match of the 2018 World Cup European Qualifiers against Liechtenstein: not only beat a weak opponent, but win big to build up goal difference that will be key in winning a group that also has Italy.

Spain did just that with a 8-0 blowout victory, with goals from Diego Costa (2), David Silva (2), Vitolo, Alvaro Morata (2) and Barcelona's own Sergi Roberto, who scored his first goal for La Roja and was one of the stars of the match.

Along with Roberto, three other Blaugrana players (Piqué, Busquets, Alba) were in action, and they all contributed to the victory (Busi even got an assist). The first half was a little tricky, with Spain suffering to break a parked bus from Liechtenstein and only scoring a goal from a set piece. The second half was a lot easier, with beautifully worked goals being scored and a much better performance from Julen Lopetegui's side.

But the absolute star of the first two games of the Lopetegui Era has undoubtedly been David Silva. The Manchester City midfielder has justfied his "Magician" nickname by absolutely bossing the midfield and running the show with goals and assists, and he did that again on Monday.

The win obviously puts Spain on top of the group, and is a big confidence boost for Lopetegui and the players. The good news for Barça is that there were no injuries or knocks, which is very important ahead of the next few weeks of club football.
