Report: Barcelona considering signing Croatian full-back on free transfer

WHAT?

The transfer window has just closed, so there's no chance that the press will link Barcelona with a player, right? Wrong.

According to a report from Ukrainian site Tribuna, longtime Shakthar Donetsk full-back and Croatian national team captain Darijo Srna could be the seventh signing made by the Catalan giants this season, and even though the window is closed, this is a deal that could happen.

That's because Srna is negotiating the end of his contract with Shakthar, which would make him a free agent that can be signed at any moment by any club regardless of when it's made. Srna's current contract ends in six months, but he wants to rescind his deal now to sign for Barça, always according to the report.

Let's look at this objectively: this would be a very good signing. First, it's free; second, Srna is a solid full-back with a great career for club and country, a guy who knows the position and plays it well; third, he's an exceptional leader and has been captain at club and country for the last 10 years.

However, this honestly doesn't sound likely. First, Robert Fernández said the squad is closed and there is no need for any more business to improve the group. Even though there isn't a proper full-back to replace Dani Alves, Sergi Roberto has been excellent in that position in the early stages of this season, and Aleix Vidal will receive more opportunities to prove his worth.

Signing Srna wouldn't be bad at all. He's good at what he does, he won't mind being on the bench, he will be a leader and his experience would be perfect after the club signed five under-23 players this summer. However, knowing the market, this is most likely a shot in the dark by his agent hoping that the Barça link will catch the attention of another big team in Europe that would be willing to sign Srna as a free agent.

Let's wait for what comes next.
