Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and his teammate Javier Mascherano have been called up by manager Edgardo Bauza to represent the Albiceleste in the South American World Cup Qualifiers against Peru (Oct. 6) and Paraguay (Oct. 11) next month. Messi won the match for Argentina against Luis Suárez' Uruguay before returning to Barça with an injury, while Mascherano played against both Uruguay and Venezuela two weeks ago.
Messi announced his retirement from national team after losing the Copa América Final against Chile last June, the third major final lost by Argentina in the last three years. After Tata Martino resigned and Edgardo Bauza took over the national side last month, Messi decided to make his return, and he did in fantastic fashion by dominating and beating Uruguay almost by himself.
Argentina are in third place behind Uruguay and Brazil, and need to stay among the top four spots to book a place in the Russia World Cup. Messi's presence will certainly be fundamental for the Albiceleste to accomplish that goal, and hopefully Leo escapes injury in the next international break.
