The stats confirm!
Barcelona fans are justifiably worried about Lionel Messi's groing/hamstring injury that is likely to cause the Argentinean superstar to miss the La Liga match against Alavés on Saturday. But it turns out the Blaugrana are pretty good without the best player of all time.
Ever since Luis Enrique took over as Barça manager, Messi has missed a total of 16 matches in two seasons. Barça's record? 13 wins, 2 draws and only one loss to Sevilla last September. It's important to note that 10 of those games happened during the two months that Messi lost to a knee injury last year. The Sevilla defeat happened in that period, with the Catalans winning eight of the other nine games during Messi's absence.
Does this mean Barça can play without Messi all the time? Of course not, and Leo never missed any huge games during the Lucho Era. The 13 wins came in low-profile Copa del Rey and league games, and the only "big" victory was against Bayer Leverkusen in the group stage of the Champions League last season.
Messi is now in risk of missing a league match against Alavés, and the Blaugranes are favorites to win it regardless of Leo playing or not. The "Without Messi" record has to be put into context, but the numbers are impressive.
