Missed opportunity?
Real Madrid announced last week that they have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Lucas Silva, confirming the rumors that had been growing for a while in terms of a big club acquiring the newest star from the land of Jogo Bonito. And, as it turns out, Barcelona could have also signed the 21-year-old.
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana were actually the first European club contacted by Silva's agents when the Cruzeiro star was put on the market. That happened because Silva's agent is actually a former Barça marketing director, Esteve Calzada, that became a player representative after leaving the Catalan club. Calzada is a respected man in the world of football, and he offered his biggest asset to Barça first.
At the time (around March of 2014), former sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta took note of Silva and promised Calzada that he would evaluate the player. Then, he sent a Barça official to Brazil before the World Cup to watch a few Cruzeiro matches and provide him with a report on Silva. Zubi decided not to move on with any sort of negotiations and never contacted the Brazilian club to show his interest on the player.
In light of the transfer ban that is now in full effect, it would have been difficult for Barça to sign Silva anyway, especially with Madrid reportedly tracking him since 2012, when he was still at Cruzeiro's youth system. He is now with Barça's biggest rival, and only the future can tell whether or not it was a good decision by the Blaugrana not to sign him when they had the chance.
